pressburg

Pressburg, Pozsony, Prešporok, Pisonium – the history of the Slovakian metropolis, today known as Bratislava, is as varied as the names it has been known by over the centuries. Pressburg present-day Bratislava in Slovakia lies on the River Danube, west of the historical kingdom of Hungry. As in many other towns and cities of the Habsburg Empire, the co-existence of various nationalities in Pressburg – the main languages spoken here were German, Hungarian and Slovakian –  was increasingly hampered by ethnic conflict during the nineteenth century. In 1918 Pressburg became the capital of Slovakia as part of the Republic of Czechoslovakia and capital of the Republic of Slovakia in 1993
